Banteay Srei

Banteay Srei, Cambodia

The Basics

Dedicated to the Hindu god Shiva, Banteay Srei was built by a scholar priest who probably tutored King Jayavarman V. See the site’s three towering shrines, a sanctuary, and two libraries, decorated with scenes from theRamayana, as well as two ornate gates, a causeway, and a number of rest houses.

The temple is northeast of downtown Siem Reap and many tours combine it with other sites in that direction, such as Kbal Spean (which is known for the River of a Thousand Lingas), Beng Mealea, or Phnom Kulen National Park. You can enter Banteay Srei with a 1-day, 3-day, or 7-day Angkor Pass.

Excellent service
Sam was amazing in providing a private tour and insights into the history of ankor wat. The second day of temple is a must as well and the guide adapted to spending more or less time where we preferred :) The customer service was exceptional in also arranging to pick us up from the airport on the first day instead of the hotel for an small fee. Would highly recommend this tour and our guide and driver Sam 1 and Sam 2!

Easy way to reach Banteay Srei & Big tour, without a hassle

Full-Day Banteay Srei & 4 Temples Join-in Tour
Pick-up was made on time, shuttled to the HQ of the tour operator where we were assigned to specific buses for each tour. We had enough time at each of the temples. Free water was offered. Lunch was taken at a pricey restaurant, compared to prices in Siem Reap, but the food was very good. Overall, it is a good & easy way to do the Big Tour at Angkor & reach Banteay Srei for a good price, with a guide & without having to negotiate a price.

Grand Tour and Banteay Srei Group Tour
We had a great tour with our guide Se. He was very friendly and helpful and had very good English. He tried his best all day to give us a great tour. He was very knowledgeable about the temples and also shared personal and cultural information with us too. He told us about the flora and fauna. Lots of guides can’t tell you the name of trees you are seeing but Se could. Well done. It was a long busy day but he kept us going and got everything in. Five stars.

The tour was more than we expected. We had a great time with a guide who has amazing knowledge and hospitality. We questioned a lot about those temples and back ground history, but he answered all of them and made us more interested in Cambodia. We would like to appreciate to our guide and also to the driver. They made our trip impressive and satisfying. This opportunity leads us to have interest in Cambodia and its history more than before. Thank you so much.

2-Day Angkor Wat Small, Big Circuit and Banteay Srei Tour
This tour has been great. Location was magic but most important my tour guide (Vanna) has be perfect. This guy introduced me perfectly the Kmar’period and he could answer to every single question I had. I could expand my conversation with him , and talk about the history of the Country in general and other topics. He was great! The tour itself is very intense (21 sites in 20h and 40000 steps to do) however it is the best way to explore and understand the Magic of Angor Wat

Our guide Pin Vannak was absolutely fantastic! We had a family of 8 adults, and we left very early in the morning and visited Angkor Wat and 8 other area temples. Pin was energetic and knowledgeable and answered every question we threw at him. I highly recommend this tour.

Small Group Banteay Srei and Big Tour from Siem Reap - Full Day
The tour guide was very good and knowledgeable. The tour included a car with driver, the guide and free water. It was a very good itinerary and the tour guide and the driver were nice and polite. I was ond day earlier with a tuk-tuk, and even if this tour is more expensive than the self arrangements with a tuk-tuk is worthy!

2-Day Angkor Wat Small, Big Circuit and Banteay Srei Tour
This was an exceptional experience. I learned so much from Jimmy and saw everything I wanted to see, including some water buffalo at the side of the road. Jimmy is also an exceptional photographer and has a supernatural ability to get everywhere just before large groups of people come, so I felt like I had some of the temples all to myself. Highly recommended.

Private Tour: Siem Reap Full Day Tour With Angkor Wat Banteay Srei Bayon Temple and Ta Prohm
The tour was excellent! I learned not only about the temples, but also about Cambodian history and culture. Mr Thou took the time to explain carvings in the walls, and was helpful with photos since I was by myself. The place we went for lunch was great as well

Superb tour. Smaller scale temples...

Full Day Banteay Srei and Grand Circuit Temples
Superb tour. Smaller scale temples than the main Angkor Wat tour but extremely interesting, beautiful and certainly work seeing. If you have time for a second tour this one is a must.

Things to Know Before You Go

  • Banteay Srei is a must for photographers and anyone with an interest in Angkor art and architecture.

  • Buy an Angkor Pass in advance; it is not available at the complex.

  • The site offers bathrooms, souvenir stalls, parking, and a number of eateries around the temple.

  • The Banteay Srei complex has accessible bathrooms. Low steps lead up to the temple structure, so travelers who rely on wheelchairs can only admire the carvings on the outside.

How to Get There

Banteay Srei is around 22 miles (36 kilometers) from downtown Siem Reap and 20 miles (32 kilometers) from the Angkor Wat temple complex. The site is far enough from the main complex that most visitors choose to head there on a different day, but the sites can all be visited in one day if necessary. There is no public transportation to the complex, so most people join a tour, hire a driver, or book a private guide.

Kbal Spean and the River of a Thousand Lingas

If the carvings at Banteay Srei pique your interest, then Kbal Spean, about 7 miles (12 kilometers) up the road, makes a great addition to the day. A beautifully carved riverbed, which fills with water between July and December, it’s also known as the River of a Thousand Lingas. Beside the lingas (phallic symbols representing the god Shiva), carvings include gods, goddesses, and even animals, while there’s a waterfall to cool off after your hike.
