Oberammergau, Germany, 82487

The Basics

Rich in culture, history, and nature, Oberammergau is located in a verdant valley between Munich and the Austrian border. The Passion Play is the town’s big draw. Legend has it that the town was spared from the worst effects of the bubonic plague after a resident vowed to perform a play depicting the Passion of the Christ every 10 years. The tradition has persisted ever since.

If you’re a culture geek, check out the frescoes, the Oberammergau Museum, and the Pilatushaus, where artisans demonstrate the town’s wood carving techniques. Oberammergau features on numerous day trips from Munich—some itineraries include stops at nearby attractions such as Linderhof Palace and Ettal Abbey. The town is also popular with hikers and winter sports enthusiasts. And don’t forget to sample Bavarian delicacies like bratwurst, sauerkraut, and apple strudel.

Private Mini Van Tour to Neuschwanstein Castle, Linderhof, Ettal & Oberammergau
Nicholas was a fantastic guide for our private tour to Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Ettal, Oberammergau, the alpine coaster and Neuschwanstein Castle. We were able to enjoy our time at our own pace while gaining excellent knowledge about Munich, Bavaria, and each stop along the way. This tour was a highlight of our family trip. Highly recommend!

Our guide was a big part of why this tour was soo great. Nicolas was the best. He was informative, interesting, funny and caring. Great tour guide. Its a long day and a long drive but well worth it. Our stop in Oberammergau was magical - the christmas shop is stunning and open all year round. The town of Oberammergau is just picturesque. The castle is just beautiful - it wasnt finished inside and the inside tour was overcrowded and not really worth it. But from the outside the castle is stunning - as is the area. We had lunch in Austria at Lake Plansee and this was wonderful. We really enjoyed the whole tour and thank Nicolas so much for being fantastic. Its a long day and you spend a lot of time with the guide so you need to get along. Highly recommend the tour and Nicolas.

Private Mini Van Tour to Neuschwanstein Castle, Linderhof, Ettal & Oberammergau
This trip lived up to it’s hype. Alex, our tour guide was fantastic. He is energetic, knowledgeable and friendly. He picked us up on time at out hotel and and had the day laid out with the ability to be flexible. We had six in our party so we were picked up in a nice large van. We stopped at the 1936 Olympic site and had a beautiful hike. we stoped at the longest toboggan ride in EU(a highlight of the trip) and had lunch next to a beautiful lake in the Austrian alps. Of course the castle attractions were a highlight too. I highly recommend this trip and ask for Alex!

How to Attend the Oberammergau Passion Play

Oberammergau’s Passion Play dates to the 17th century, and attracts some 500,000 visitors to its stagings. As the play is held only once a decade (in years ending in a 0), it’s worth making plans in advance. Performances happen roughly 100 times between May and October, and you can purchase tickets and 2- or 3-day packages online.
