The Basics

While most visitors come to Doi Suthep-Pui National Park to see the temple, it’s also a place of great natural beauty, where numerous nature trails wind through the forest and past several waterfalls. The park is home to some 300 bird species and another 2,000 species of flowering plants and ferns, making it a great destination for wildlife viewing. Numerous tours include a visit to the famous temple, paired with a range of other activities inside the park—biking, hill tribe visits, waterfall hikes, meditation classes, or tours of Phu Ping Palace.

You get two options for down hill mountain biking . Take the road down from mountain (east) or take the forest paths. Take the paths . Extremely fun . Be in good physical shape . 6 hours of going

Challenging but Worth It!

6-Hour Hike and Bike in Doi Suthep Pui National Park Combo from Chiang Mai
This was a super fun day! It ended up just being me alone with the tour guide, and so I was very happy I could still do the tour. I didn’t do the biking, but hiked only. Wow, was it physically challenging! Not recommended if you aren’t in good shape. Lots of uphill hiking and then a staircase of hundreds of steps up to the mountain temple. It was right on the edge of being too challenging for me, but it was worth it for everything we saw. Highlights for me were the waterfall, golden temple and visiting the Hmong village. Lots of beautiful views along the way. Just be prepared to sweat! The guide was really friendly and knowledgeable. Lunch was good.

Not so Beginner

Doi Suthep National Park Beginner Downhill Bike Ride from Chiang Mai
The expereince was fun and quite adventurious but the only reason I am giving this 4 out of 5 stars is this was definitely not beginner. The trail we went down was quite tough and at times dangerous. The trail had been trenched out due to rian and cars so with any rain the trail was slippery. Definitely not for someone who hasn't ridden a bike on anything besides the road. Nonetheless, the guides were great an patient with everyone. I had a blast and was sore for a few days after. The scenery was incredible and the lunch at the end with a beer was just the way to end off a tough day.

6-Hour Hike and Bike in Doi Suthep Pui National Park Combo from Chiang Mai
I would’ve been more disappointed in this excursion had it not been for my fantastic guide Ae. So because of him I’m giving a 5 star rating. He might’ve been the best guide I’ve ever had. His knowledge of Thai history, plants and animals, and the mountains you hike was incredible. He was also very entertaining and made everyone laugh a lot. I’m someone who enjoys learning and pushing myself physically, so if that’s you, you’ll be very satisfied with the hike and the temple and village visit. As far as the mountain bike ride, I was very disappointed because all we did was ride the same main paved road down the cars take for about 40 minutes in total. I understand the mountain bike trails were closed in the national park, but this should’ve been told to me when I booked the trip, not when I showed up. The owner of the company (I think) called the day before and just said the mountain bike route was changing because the road to the lake was closed. There was no mention that we’d just be taking the paved road down all the way. I was really looking forward to a good mountain bike ride and that was the primary reason I booked this tour. Otherwise I would’ve taken one of the much cheaper hiking only tours. I blame the owner for this, not my guide. Ae was very understanding and upfront about all this from the beginning and did his best to make up for it by giving us an incredible day of hiking and an excellent outdoor education. Thank you Ae!

All About Physical Activity

6-Hour Hike and Bike in Doi Suthep Pui National Park Combo from Chiang Mai
Our guide and driver arrived on time, which I am always thankful for. This tour was a challenge physically. The uphill portion of the hike was a challenge, but didn't last long, downhill was a breeze. I could tell the view at the top of Chiang Mai would be beautiful, but for us, it was cloudy, so couldn't see much. I know that's out of the tour guide's control so certainly not part of my rating. The food stop in the small village was quaint, but no one explained anything about the village. That would have added some culture to the trip. Having read several reviews before booking, I was pretty sure the bike ride down the mountain would be interesting, and it certainly was! The road is a mixture of dirt, rocks, and broken concrete. If you have experience off road biking, like one of the others on the tour, you might consider it easy. For me it was a challenge. I took my time, and made it down safely with a few scrapes. I consider my physical ability to be average. My husband, very physically fit, ran the LA marathon last year fit, also took his time riding down and he found it to be a challenge - no off road biking experience either. I will say we felt really good to finish! We weren't hungry at the last food stop so opted for beverages and a rest instead. Was sore the next day and a nice Thai Massage did the trick to loosen us up! What could make the tour better would be to incorporate a bit more culture, or maybe a few stops along the road at viewpoints on the drive up to explain what is in the park. As is, this tour is all about being physical.

Hiking the Monk’s Trail

Doi Suthep-Pui National Park has no shortage of hiking trails, but the Monk’s Trail ranks among the most famous. This trail leads from Chiang Mai University to Wat Phra Doi Suthep Temple. It gets its name from the monks that still use the trail to get to and from the temple, and the path is marked by distinctive saffron-colored ribbons tied to the trees.
