Can Gio Mangrove Biosphere Reserve

Rừng Sác, Cần Giờ, Hồ Chí Minh, Vietnam

The Basics

The road to Can Gio is relatively traffic-free and makes a fun scooter trip if you have the appropriate licenses, insurance, and experience; after all, Vietnam’s roads are no place for beginners. If you prefer less ambitious transportation, fast ferries run to the region from central Saigon.

Alternatively, you can arrive in style with a speedboat tour from the heart of Saigon or travel to the island on a minibus then transfer to a boat. Can Gio tours typically include a mangrove cruise, a visit to the macaques on Monkey Island, and a trip to the crocodile farm; a few also focus on the migrating birds. Some Can Gio Mangrove Biosphere Reserve tours stop at a riverside market or Can Gio Museum on route to the reserve.

I was picked up at my hotel on time and taken to the dock to board my boat. I met the guide there and he impressed me right away. throughout the day he proved to be an most excellent guide, he was knowledgeable about the area, both natural and man made. he described to us the changing nature of the river along with Vietnamese culture. I feel I learned a lot from him and will leave Vietnam with a better understanding of it people because of him

A Fabulous Day out

Can Gio Biosphere Reserve Tour by Luxury Speedboat
I highly recommend this tour, especially our guides and crew - Henry, Thy, Tu and Be - were super!!! They thought of everything and anything we may need, were so friendly, helpful and super informative about all the various things we experienced. They took care of us so well and made this a wonderful day out. I would especially recommend this to those that do not want to do the regular run of the mill tours and don't want to be packed in with a large number of tourists.

Really, really good tour. Visit to market was fascinating and gave you a real feel for the real culture of Vietnam. Feeding the crocodiles was exciting and unique. Monkeys were great and fun to watch. Seeing such large bats was an experience but for that and birds would really have benefited from binoculars. Kept us very well fed and watered through out the trip and looked after us very well. Whole family thought it the best trip we did in Vietnam

A memorable day away from the city

Can Gio Biosphere Reserve Tour by Luxury Speedboat
A nice trip that combined both a tour of the area around Ho Chi Minh as well as some up close and personal time with nature. You'll get to see the City itself from a different viewpoint than on the city streets and then head out into the nature reserve to spend time with monkeys, birds and crocodiles. Cap it off with an excellent meal before a return to the city. We had a fairly small group compared to the potential limit, so we had ample time at each location along with real direct interaction with our excellent guide, Henry. Nothing felt too rushed or hurried. We also had more than enough time at the crocodile feeding portion of the trip as opposed to the experiences of other reviewers and were each able to feed multiple crocs multiple times. If anything we maybe had a little too much time with the bats and at the bird sanctuary. Maybe if you were really into bats or birds it would have been more enjoyable but I personally found those parts of the tour to drag a little.

Back to nature

Can Gio Biosphere Reserve Tour by Luxury Speedboat
We chose this tour as we wanted to see some of Vietnam's nature and to be in a small group only. Picked up by speedboat on the river we were served fresh fruit and cold soft drinks as the boat travelled along the river and then a canal, allowing us to see the people of Saigon. We stopped at a local market where our tour guide told us about the local cuisine and foods they eat. We then went to a mangrove forest where we were taken by small canoes across a lake to see a colony of fruit bats. Looking closer to the shore you saw crabs with purple claws holding onto the mangrove roots. Then off to dinner where, beforehand we went fishing for crocodiles! As well as this we saw wild monkeys being fed before a lovely lunch. Then back to the boat before the trip back and then transfer to our hotel. Throughout our guide was great, very knowledgable and his team kept us supplied with local food which they prepared on board. An excellent trip.

Things to Know Before You Go

  • Can Gio Mangrove Biosphere Reserve is a great destination for lovers of nature; look for small-group tours that focus on the wilderness, not the farms.

  • The mangrove forests attract mosquitoes, so bring plenty of bug spray.

  • With monkeys, crocodiles, and mangroves, Can Gio can make a great day trip with kids. Be sure to bring water, sunscreen, and snacks.

How to Get There

Around 27 miles (60 kilometers) southeast of Ho Chi Minh City, Can Gio island is most easily reached from Saigon by the Greenlines ferry, although schedules make that route most suitable for visitors who want to stay overnight. Assuming you want to join a boat trip on arrival, book a Can Gio tour that includes door-to-door round-trip transfers.

When to Get There

You can visit Can Gio Mangrove Biosphere Reserve (Khu dự trữ sinh quyển rừng ngập mặn Cần Giờ) at any time of year, but if migrating birds are part of the attraction, you should come during the breeding season (November until May). Among the myriad species you can hope to see are spot-billed pelicans and painted storks.

Can Gio the Mangrove Ecosystem

Bizarre shrubs that thrive in brackish coastal waters, mangroves create their own unique ecosystems, and the Can Gio biosphere is home to over 200 species of fauna. While the animals you’re most likely to see on a Can Gio tour are macaques, crocodiles, fruit bats, and (in season) migratory birds, the island is also home to king cobras and fishing cats.
