The Basics

The main—and the only inhabited—Cham Island is Hon Lao, where public boats arrive, as do most day tours. While it’s possible to stay overnight on the islands, most travelers visit as a day trip from either Hoi An or Da Nang. Many Cham Island tours focus on the underwater attractions, whether diving, snorkeling, or underwater walking. Speedboat tours typically include stops at two or more beaches, which are hard to reach overland independently.

Cham Islands Snorkeling Tour by Wooden Boat from Hoi An
We opted for the speed boat transfer to Cham Islands and it sure is speedy but the driver knew exactly what he was doing. The first spot snorkelling is a little cloudy but you get the hang of snorkelling here if you've never done so. The second spot is so clear and so much to see. Then you have lunch on a beautiful island time to rinse off and change into some clothes and relax! Loved this, can recommend!

FULL-DAY CHAM ISLAND DISCOVERY & SNORKELING from HOI AN
The trip was ideal for everyone who wants to see the beauty of nature. The beach is so beautiful and you got to swim or sunbathe on it. The 7-course lunch was decent and delicious. The tour guide is friendly and helpful, and you got to see the local life on the Cham Island as well. AMAZING TOUR!

FULL-DAY CHAM ISLAND DISCOVERY & SNORKELING from HOI AN
Thanh Tran was our tour guide. He really made this day a great day for us. I had booked this online, not really knowing what to expect. Our guide was knowledgeable, he was extremely nice, and friendly, really gave us a great idea about Cham island, and the Biosphere reserve. We saw the local markets, he explained to us all about the local herbs being sold. We ate altogether when came the time to have lunch, he explained some more about some interesting sea foods. If you end up getting Thanh as your tour guide you will really like the trip!

Cham Islands Snorkeling Tour by Wooden Boat from Hoi An
We had a great day. They came to pick us up at the hotel as explained and we took a boat to get to the island where we snorkeled. Surprisingly, we were the only 2 participants, so we had the whole boat for us. We had the chance to see different type of fish and coral. It's not the Great Barrier Reef but there was some colorful ones. Lunch was very generous and offered a big variety. Finally, we had a good 2h at the beach before returning by jet boat to the wharf. The beach was small but nice and I imagine it gets very crowded with every boats stopping there for lunch during the high season or week-ends. You have a free access to hammock and chairs to enjoy the view. Special thanks to our guide. He was bilingual, very polite and generous. By being the only tourist onboard, we took the opportunity to talk with him about Vietnam's life and have a nice chat. All day long, he has been very attentive and friendly.

Things to Know Before You Go

  • Shops and facilities are limited on the Cham Islands: Don’t forget your sunscreen.

  • Both public boats and tour boats can be dangerously crowded: Use common sense before boarding.

  • While bikinis are fine on the beach, put clothes on when leaving the beach or exploring villages.

How to Get There

Public boats, tour boats, and private speedboats depart near Cua Dai beach, outside Hoi An city. As riding the public boat means an overnight stay, most travelers opt for an organized speedboat tour. Boat trips typically include pickup and drop-off from hotels in either Hoi An or Da Nang.

Cham Island Beaches

White sands are Cham Island’s main draw. The most popular tourist beaches are Chong Beach (Bai Chong) and Ong Beach. Both have restaurants and sun loungers. Bac Beach is laid-back, with hammocks, while Xep Beach (Bai Xep) is a pretty bay with a traditional fishing village. Small islands are more commonly visited on dive tours.
