The Basics

Inverness Castle has long played an important role in Scotland’s story, and is a must-visit for history buffs. Thanks to its elevated setting at the summit of Castle Hill, it also affords views over the river and Inverness, the capital of the Scottish Highlands. Most visitors explore independently, strolling around the grounds to see a Flora MacDonald statue and informational plaques detailing the site’s history. It’s a good place to get a primer on local historical information before venturing to nearby sites with Jacobite connections, such as the Culloden Battlefield or Urquhart Castle. Guided sightseeing tours of the city typically include a glimpse of the castle exterior, while hop-on hop-off bus tours also stop at the castle site.

Went on the blue tour, actually booked it by mistake, instead of red. Was good tour, with exceptionally good, funny driver. Went on the red tour right after it and hopped off and on a couple of times.

City Sightseeing Inverness Hop-On Hop-Off Bus Tour
Enjoyed the River Ness and the history involving St. Columba. Great to get the layout of the city and area. Seeing the Caledonian Lochs was a nice plus along with the Dochgarroch Loch. It also nicely worked in history of the area with the Inverness Castle and Flora MacDonald statue.

Good tour but tries to pack too much in.

Tour 2 Cawdor Castle, Inverness, Culloden Battlefield and Loch Ness
Tour was good. Cawdor castle was very interesting and the gardens were beautiful. Culloden battlefield had some interesting history and our tour guide went into detail about it. A must stop if you’re a fan of Outlander. We only had about 40 minutes in Inverness and wished we could have spent more time exploring there than taking the longer “scenic route.” Also the stop at Loch Ness was only about 10 minutes on the side of the roadway. Enough time to take a few pictures but that is all. I would recommend not stopping at Beauly and using that time in Inverness. Plan on bringing a snack since There really is no time to get a meal along the way.

City Sightseeing Inverness Hop-On Hop-Off Bus Tour
Ear phones would have been handy as it was hard to hear the commentary, especially when the bus drove faster in the country. Not a huge amount to see but it was good to get your bearings of the city. Pleasant trip.

When to Get There

The views from Inverness Castle are best on clear, sunny days. The grounds are busiest during warm summer weather, but even then, crowds are rare. The setting is romantic at sunset, when the sun’s soft rays hit the surface of the River Ness.
