Jalan Surabaya Market (Pasar Antik Jalan Surabaya)
There is no admission charge for the Jalan Surabaya Flea Market and you’re free to wander at will among the shops and stalls. A private guide can help when it comes to bargaining and perhaps even identifying the many fakes, but many travelers prefer to shop—or window shop—at leisure. Jalan Surabaya Flea Market is an occasional stop on Jakarta tours and a popular request if exploring with a private driver/guide.
Things to Know Before You Go
Jalan Surabaya Flea Market is a must for vintage fans.
Jakarta’s streets are conservative, so most women will feel more comfortable wearing clothes that cover legs and shoulders.
Bargaining is an absolute must—and if a price seems too good to be true, the article in question is probably fake.
Caucasian travelers can expect to be charged extra as they are obviously not local.
How to Get There
Jalan Surabaya is in Menteng, central Jakarta, about 2.5 miles (4 kilometers) south of Merdeka Square and 5 miles (8 kilometers) south of Fatahillah Square. It’s a short walk from Cikini station, which has trains from Kota, but many will prefer to navigate Jakarta’s gridlock with a private guide and driver or join an organized tour.
When to Get There
The shops at Jalan Surabaya are open from morning to afternoon seven days a week, with some staying open into the evening as well. The shopping experience is less crowded during the working week, Monday to Friday, while some stores shut for Friday prayers around lunchtime.
The Risks of Buying Antiques in Indonesia
Indonesian artisans churn out fake antiques by the bucketload, with some of the cheapest fakes mass-produced in China. Workshops on Bali carve and artificially age pieces from doors to bed frames and sculptures. If an authentic antique is on your bucket list, don’t shop Jalan Surabaya. Visit specialist antique dealers or galleries instead.
