Matang Wildlife Centre
The Basics
Besides viewing the animals—many of which are difficult to spot in the wild—enjoy a riverside picnic area or a hike through the jungle on one of four marked trails that offer treks ranging from one to four hours. Tours of Matang Wildlife Centre typically depart from Kuching and combine the rehabilitation center with trekking in Kubah National Park or a visit to Sarawak Cultural Village, which is dedicated to the region’s local ethnic groups.
Things to Know Before You Go
While it’s possible to spot native wildlife along the nature trails in Matang Wildlife Centre, remember that the animals should be viewed from a safe distance.
Due to uneven terrain, it's difficult to hike through the park if you’re using a wheelchair or stroller.
Many of the center’s caged animals are fed in the morning.
Water, insect repellent, and a light poncho are recommended if you plan to hike.
How to Get There
Matang Wildlife Centre is 18 miles (30 kilometers) from Kuching. You can take the No. 11 bus line from Kuching to Kubah, but you’ll need to take a taxi from there. For ease, visit as a part of a tour that includes round-trip transfers.
When to Get There
The park is open daily from morning until early evening year-round. Borneo experiences the most rain and highest humidity in December and January. Though the climate is always prone to downpours, the best weather is between March and October.
Exploring Kubah National Park
Located on a sandstone plateau, Kubah National Park lures with its rainforest scenery—which encompasses 93 different species of palm tree—and diverse bird species. A trip through the park reveals one of the widest selections of orchids in Borneo and animals including mouse deer, bearded pigs, and an abundance of reptiles. Plus, you can stay overnight in the park for an immersive jungle experience.
