Beatrix Potter’s Hill Top House

Near Sawrey, Hawkshead, Ambleside, England

The Basics

Hill Top is often visited as part of Beatrix Potter-themed tours of the Lake District, which typically include stops at Wray Castle, the holiday home of the Potter family; Tarn Hows, a beauty spot where Potter owned a significant plot of land; and the Beatrix Potter Gallery in Hawkshead, which showcases her original illustrations. Many literary tours combine Hill Top with literary landmarks such as Dove Cottage, the former home of William Wordsworth.

Many Lake District day tours or multi-day trips tend to include Hill Top in their itineraries, along with a cruise on either Lake Windermere or Coniston Water.

BIG thank you to Telly and Sandra
I think this is the biggest takeaway from my short trip to Lake District! Telly is so knowledgeable ! I had very little idea about the Beatrix Potter before the trip, but I was so intrigued and inspired by herself and her life, so a big thank you to Telly and Sandra! I am so glad and so thankful that I booked this tour with you!

Beatrix Potter: Afternoon Half Day All-Inclusive Tour with an Expert Guide
Gillian was phenomenal and we learnt so much about the history of the Lake District & the incredible forward thinking Beatrix Potter. A font of as much knowledge we could absorb keeping us engaged through out the afternoon. Sandra’s expert manoeuvring of the mini bus made them a dynamic duo to be recommended to everyone. When we come back we will call them first to arrange another guided tour. Thank you 😊

Beatrix Potter: Morning Half Day All-Inclusive Tour with an Expert Guide
An absolutely beautiful and fun tour. The best we have ever done ! The tour guides were so kind and so knowledgeable! We were taken all around several points of interest and there was never a dull moment. We were shown artefacts and stopped off at some of the most beautiful peaks. Even on a rainy day, we would do it all again. Thank you so much

Beatrix Potter: Full Day All-Inclusive Tour with an Expert Guide
If you love the Lake region of England and Beatrix Potter, then this is the tour for you. This tour was given by Tim and Jill, and I would go back tomorrow if I could, to have them again as my tour guides. They are so knowledgable and professional, but make you feel like family. I know and understand Beatrix Potter so much more in depth than before and after their tour of the Lake region, I have it's beauty forever etched in my mind.

Beatrix Potter: Morning Half Day All-Inclusive Tour with an Expert Guide
Really informative and fun tour with Tim. It was great to learn more about Beatrix Potter and her impact on the area. He referenced the illustrations from her books which really brought things to life. Each drop-off gave you just about the right amount of time to see things. We throughly enjoyed visiting the beautiful Hill Top and the village of Hawkshead in particular. Tim was a friendly and knowledgable guide.

Phenomenal Tour with Wonderful Guide and Driver

Beatrix Potter: Morning Half Day All-Inclusive Tour with an Expert Guide
I think this might be the best tour I have ever been on ... and I use Viator tours whenever I am in a new place. The Beatrix Potter tour was amazing--the tour went to the usual places -- Hilltop Farm and surrounding villages, but, the tour was anything but usual-because the tour guide was so knowledgeable and had a more holistic view--historic, architectural, agricultural, art, everyday life and more types of information that gave the life of BP and her work a rich and varied tapestry. The knowledge of the guide and the driver spanned eons. We also stopped to capture some stunning Lake District views! Could not have been better--just wonderful. I did pay the extra to go in Hilltop and it is well worth the cost and the time because the BP books just jump off of the pages when you see the interiors which are reflected in some of the books. But, if you don't, it is still amazing as the grounds are stunningly pretty. I loved this morning daytrip--the weather was so cool and crisp in the morning -- which was great because I visited during the heatwave. This tour made my short stay in the area a smashing success!!!!

What to Expect Inside the Farmhouse

Inside the stone farmhouse, the interior seems frozen in time, preserved to appear exactly how it would have before Potter’s death in 1943. More than 1,400 objects are displayed in the house, from antique furniture and original sketches to early Peter Rabbit merchandise as well as Potter’s own glasses, which would have aided her with her illustrating as her eyesight began to wane.
