Private Shakespeare Walking Tour of London

Private Shakespeare Walking Tour of London

Led by one of our fantastic guides, who are not only experienced tour guides but actors or directors who trained at some of the finest drama schools in the world including the prestigious Royal Central School of Speech and Drama, this tour is not to be missed! Starting at Farringdon Station we will explore locations that Shakespeare would have been familiar with and which are still left standing after the great fire of London and the London Blitz. We will also explore areas of London, which although much changed, inspired Shakespeare and allowed him to progress from being the son of a glove maker to a servant of the King. During the tour we will learn how Shakespeare became the ‘immortal bard’, debate if Shakespeare wrote the plays we credit him with and explore why Shakespeare’s works are still enjoyed and celebrated in the 21st Century. Please note that due to the distance between locations the tour will use public transport between Barbican and Aldgate Underground Stations.

River Thames London Walking Tour

This tour takes us along the banks of the River Thames between two of the most famous buildings in the world, the Houses of Parliament & the Tower of London. We will travel on both sides of this famous old river which locals lovingly refer to as 'Old Father Thames' at various points along the tour. The fine buildings of London are meant to be seen from the river side & we will learn how things have changed over the centuries and millennia & learn how the river has shaped and influenced London right up to the present day. We will learn the stories of some people that lived along the banks and some of the terrible disasters that have befallen the city. It's not all bad news though as we will past some iconic bridges, amazing photo opportunities & some of the most funky parts of town that until now travellers rarely got the chance to explore. We will see many of the most famous sights in London but also hidden places right by the river which are little changed from centuries ago.

Private Walking Tour from the Tower to the Tate

Private Walking Tour from the Tower to the Tate

Within a distance of no more than 2 miles, this tour is crammed with variety. The tour starts with the Tower of London built 900 years ago by William the Conqueror following his conquest of 1066 and ends at the Tate Modern, an art gallery in a refurbished power station opened by the Queen in May 2000. And there is so much to be enjoyed in between! There is no comparison between the crowded docks of days gone by and the tranquil gallerias which have taken over the old wharves with their charming shops, restaurants and bars of today! Moving to Bankside in Southwark, we can still see the magnificent Southwark Cathedral, the ruins of what was once the lavish home of the Bishops of Winchester and the magnificent new Globe theatre. And then there are the views as the centuries old skyline competes with the modern giants of the age. This is a tour of contrasts, from history and heritage to medicine and drama, it's a must. Oh, and there are coffee shops too so we can stop for a cuppa!

Southwark: London's Historic Entertainment District Audio Tour by VoiceMap

On this self-guided GPS audio walk we follow in the footsteps of Chaucer and Shakespeare across London Bridge to the south bank of the Thames. Here is the district of Southwark, which used to have a murky reputation, as it provided the entertainment, manufacture and trade that City dwellers wanted but were not permitted within the boundaries of the City. You will visit ancient inns, churches, hospitals, markets and prisons, covering nearly 2,000 years of London history. The walk ends at the massive former Bankside Power Station, now converted into one of London's top tourist attractions - the Tate Modern Art Gallery. Excerpt from Oliver Twist by Charles Dickens - read by Rebecca Dittman. Courtesy of Librivox. The tour is ready whenever you are and the audio plays automatically at exactly the right time and place using your smartphone's GPS and the VoiceMap mobile app, which also works offline.

Sizzling Southwark

Sizzling Southwark

As Southwark was London's 1st borough, it supplied the City of London with all its needs. For centuries it became the entertainment centre for the City's young men looking for a bit of fun - from inns and brothels to theatres and bear baiting, from beer to food, Southwark had it all. But Southwark was not just about supplying its wealthy neighbour: living side by side with Southwark's poor were the Bishops of Winchester living in their grand palace and supporting the magnificent St Saviour's church, as Southwark Cathedral was then known. Nowadays, there is so much to see: the soaring arches and dramatic ceilings of the cathedral; the ruins of the once lavish Winchester Palace, the glorious Globe theatre and the life sized replica of the Golden Hinde, the boat that circumnavigated the globe in the 1570s. Add to that the fascinating tales of Southwark's history, intriguing explanations of phrases like Winchester geese and the truly spectacular views across London, you have a great tour!
