300 meters before entrance to Kuang Si Waterfalls, Louangphabang, Laos

The Basics

There’s a small charge to visit the Kuang Si Falls, which are usually experienced as part of a day trip from Luang Prabang. While you don’t need a guide to enjoy the falls, the general absence of public transport and challenges of self-driving in Laos make tours worthwhile.

Day tours typically combine the Kuang Si waterfalls (and perhaps the Tat Kuang Si Bear Rescue Centre) with other attractions, such as minority villages, the Pak Ou Caves, or the Pha Tad Ke Botanical Garden. Kuang Si Falls hiking tours are also an option.

Amazing experience! The guide - Mr Thin - spoke excellent English and gave us helpful insights. I was also lucky that the tour group was also a lovely group of people. A wonderful way to spend the day!

1 DAY Mekong Cruise to Pak Ou Caves. Kuang Si Waterfalls . Local Villages
This was an excellent day trip. It was a very good combination of a relaxing river cruise, sightseeing, beautiful waterfalls (with very few people there at the end of the day). The lunch was amazing and our tour guide was absolutely fantastic. I would highly recommend this tour.

River cruise was great, caves and waterfalls are awesome, and lunch at the elephant camp was lovely. Mr. Thin is a great guide as well. Could have done without the stops at the two villages... tourist traps

Kuang Si Waterfall Minibus Ticket (Private)
The company wrote to me right after the booking. In Laos things are a bit more difficult, i thought that they were not coming because was a bit late, but the problema was that in town you have 2 hotela with the same name not their fault. Everything correct and Nice, and If someone has any doubt, they have an office of the main street of Luang Pabrang Really easy to fins.

This was one of the best tours I’ve ever been on! ( and I have been on dozens) Our guide, Deng was knowledgeable, friendly, spoke English well, and was professional. Our driver was very safe and profesional too. Every part of the tour was wonderful and we got to experience the cultural things of Laos that are not often seen. The lunch was fantastic! The highlight was the waterfalls; simply one of the most beautiful waterfalls in the world.I highly recommend Manifa Tours and Deng!

So peaceful on the Mekong river. But if you have trouble walking the caves are a challenging. But all in all a wonderful trip. Just pace yourself.

1 DAY Mekong Cruise to Pak Ou Caves. Kuang Si Waterfalls . Local Villages
This was a very good tour. The boat trip down the Mekong River was very nice, and the beach area were the tour first landed and spent close to an hour was lovely, as the view from the beach area of the mountains was magnificent, Then, we headed to the Pak Ou caves. The climb to the cave to the left of the landing is quite steep but well worth the climb, as this cave contains the nicest collection of Buddhist statues. The remaining climb to the cave on the right side of the mountain is not steep after climbing to the left cave. There is no need to bring flashlights as the caves are decently lit (although all of the guidebooks tell you to bring a flashlight.) Do wear sneakers or comfortable walking shoes. After visiting the Pak Ou caves, the van ride to the Kuang Si Waterfalls is fine. The Kuang Si Waterfalls is much more than waterfalls. It is a large park that contains rescued black bears and the viewing areas are great, especially the one that one is behind the glass-enclosed area. There are other animals and birds in this park as well as lovely flowers. The waterfalls are very nice and you should climb to the top of the trail, as I guarantee that you will be taking pictures of the numerous waterfalls as you go through the trail. As you can see, this is a full day tour and you should return back to Luang Prabang close to sunset, around 5:30 PM (if you do this tour in the winter months). Please know that this was my second trip to Luang Prabang and it was worth re-taking this Viator tour. I highly recommend doing it if you plan to visit Luang Prabang. Also, do not miss having great Laotian-French fusion food when you visit this lovely place.

1 DAY Mekong Cruise to Pak Ou Caves. Kuang Si Waterfalls . Local Villages
This tour was better than expected. It included *everything* there was to see and do in the area. Our guide’s English was much better than the other tours we have been on, and he was very friendly and knowledgeable. Everything was efficient, timely, and accommodating. The food was the best we had during our stay, however,!! ..it was at an elephant RIDING camp, and I do not support that, and neither should you. I was not aware of this fact during booking, or I would not have gone. If they would stop supporting this place, and instead an ethical, conservation one, it would be a top 5-star rating.

Things to Know Before You Go

  • Between the butterfly park, the bear-rescue sanctuary, and the falls themselves, the Kuang Si area makes an excellent family day out.

  • Lao women don’t wear bikinis and often swim in T-shirts and shorts or fully clothed. Men should add a T-shirt to their swimwear, while women should wear one-pieces or wear a T-shirt over their bikini.

  • The Kuang Si Falls are equipped with simple public restrooms and changing rooms.

  • The path to the falls is not wheelchair-friendly.

How to Get There

The Kuang Si Falls cascade about 18 miles (29 kilometers) southwest of Luang Prabang. As so often with Lao tourist attractions, there is no public transport. Chartering your own tuk-tuk or joining an organized Kuang Si tour is easier and safer than driving. The journey takes around 45 minutes in each direction.

When to Get There

The Kuang Si Falls are at their most intense between June and October but are still impressive during March, April, and May. The dry season, roughly November to January, is Luang Prabang’s tourist peak. The falls are far from magical during this time, although the butterfly park and bear-rescue center are operational.

The Tat Kuang Si Bear Rescue Centre

Moon bears (Asian black bears) are often farmed for their bile, which is used in traditional medicines. Crammed into cages, unable to move, with catheters inserted directly into their gall bladders, it’s a brutal life, and the Tat Kuang Si Bear Rescue Centre helps save them from it. Do consider a visit while you’re at the falls.
