Wat Phnom

Sangkat Wat Phnom, Phnom Penh, Cambodia

The Basics

Wat Phnom is almost always included on the itinerary of half- or full-day Phnom Penh tours, along with stops at the harrowing Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum and Killing Fields of Choeung Ek, and the Royal Palace. If you prefer to customize your own sightseeing itinerary, visit Wat Phnom as part of a hop-on hop-off bus tour; you’ll have the freedom to disembark whenever an attraction captures your attention and travel around in air-conditioned comfort.

The 2 destinations i went to were well chosen. i wish we could have included a couple more activities in the afternoons: like cooking shows or mine museum - i had an extra couple of days that helped - the markets in Siem reap are awesome to shop for gifts. the guide we had was very knowledgeable and helped in booking other activities. the taxi that was prepaid did not show on my last day. that was my only complaint and i had to pay extra to get to airport.

Phnom Penh Vital Discovery-Full Day Tour (Including all services)
Absolutely perfect tour. My tour guide Kosorl was lovely and very knowledgeable. The Palace, Silver Pagoda and Wat Phnom were beautiful. The Genocide Musuem were so sad to see, but also show the resilience of the beautiful Cambodian people.

6-Day Private Cambodia Tour to Angkor Wat in Siem Reap and Phnom Penh
Our guide, Tom, in Siem Reap was terrific. We could not have asked for anyone better. His knowledge of the area, how best to get around to avoid traffic and crowds, best sights to see, history of the sights, and his English was excellent. The Cambodians have done well in a relatively short time since the Khmer Rouge to prepare sights of historical significance for tourism and to protect them from vandalism. Our hotel in Siem Reap was the Tara Angkor and it was fabulous. The accommodations were very comfortable and the food at the restaurant was delicious. In Phnom Penh, we stayed at the Frangipani Hotel and it was comfortable and clean. The staff at the Frangipani were the best...helpful, courteous, friendly, wonderful people! The hotel has a roof-top restaurant with incredible views and great food. Our guide in Phnom Penh was Siam; again, an excellent guide and very accommodating. Siam took us to the killing fields and the Royal Palace - a stark contrast indeed. The killing fields and prison were very well preserved and presented. During our visit to the prison museum compound inside the city, we were able to personally meet two of the very few survivors who were children at the time of the killings. We decided to extend our time in this city and Siam made sure we had our transport to airport when we needed it. On our own, we found it easy to get around. The Hotel Frangipani was centrally located and many sights were within walking distance or a short tuk tuk ride. For our week in Cambodia, this was a perfect tour and I would highly recommend it. Our trip was in October when the heat and humidity was high. If possible, I would recommend you travel to Cambodia in December or January when the weather is supposed to be at its best.

We had a great tour. Nich was an excellent guide. She shared slit of information with us not only about the tour subject but everyday life too. She dealt well with an emotional tour in a sensitive way.

Full-Day Phnom Penh City Tours
We enjoyed our tour of Phnom Penh very much. Our guide was very knowledgeable about the history of Cambodia and was always eager to answer our questions. The driver and van were very nice as well. The visit to the Killing fields and S-21 went longer than expected and our guide arrived later than the original time, so we were unable to visit some of the other sites that were listed for this tour when I booked. We did see The Royal Palace but only drive by Wat Phnom snd never went to the Russian Market. I was disappointed by this but wonder if maybe trying to see so much in one day isn’t a good idea. I’d recommend doing two half day tours to avoid what happened to us.

Things to Know Before You Go

  • During national holidays, the temple can be very crowded.

  • Watch out for the wild monkeys that like to steal food and bottled drinks.

  • Be mindful of your belongings at busy periods.

  • There’s a small admission fee.

How to Get There

Wat Phnom’s close proximity to the US Embassy, the French Colonial post office, and Raffles Hotel on Michael Howe Street makes it an ideal starting point for a tour of the city. The easiest way to reach the temple is by taxi or tuk-tuk, or as part of a guided tour.

When to Get There

The temple’s elevated position above the sprawling city makes it a great place to watch the sunset. However, bear in mind that sundown is the busiest time of day. If you want to beat the crowds, head to the temple in the early morning.

The Legend of Wat Phnom

Local legend says that in 1373, following a flash flood, a wealthy widow named Daun Chi Penh found four bronze Buddha statues inside of a floating tree on the Tonle Sap River. She rallied the nearby residents and had them create an 88-foot (27-meter) mound, and then erected a shrine on top to hold the Buddhas. The hill is said to be the origin of modern Phnom Penh, which translates as Penh's Hill.
