Educational, insightful, personal and highly recommended - go deeper with this tour!

While we visited many places and went on many tours, this one was one of my favorites for many reasons. Instead of just going to see a site, this provided such a personal, educational and insightful view of Chiang Mai, its history, and its craftsmen and we are much the richer for it. Our guide started us at the Chaing Mai Arts and Cultural Center, introducing us to the ancient and fascinating history of the area from prehistory through to the present. You can't help but see the area through new eyes and appreciate each site more when you feel the historical connection. The time at the museum was very well spent and prepared us for the various types of arts and crafts in this area - so diverse in people and rich in artisanship. The rest of the day was spent off the beaten track, travelling to small and large Wats that house families of craftsmen who decorate the temples and homes. We had an incredible experience with an older women - 4 th generation of her familiy in creating the stunning metalwork that decorates the wats. She was making the special long metal fingernails for dancers - the origin of which we learned at the museum (Princess Dara of the Lanna Kingdom and eventual Queen Consort to the King of Thailand - I wish I could meet her, she sounds like a force of Nature). This woman was a treasure of history and information - our guide translating quickly and truly as fascinated as we were. I got to try making a fingernail (VERY hard!) and lots of laughter and information exchanged using translation and non-verbal communication! We also got to watch her relatives working on incredible lace-like yet strong metal decorating for temples, under the watchful eyes of the chickens, the cats, and the dogs. It was such an intimate experience. I purchased some of her beautiful highly detailed metal hair flowers that can also serve as a bouquet that will last forever. We then went to visit the silversmiths who create the massive raised relief murals, bowls, plates, and wall decor. We saw a Wat with amazing samples of the work and did a bit of shopping as well. Last we went to a large Wat that housed a number of silverworkers and where the skill is taught. We were given a chance to try ourselves and made small cut outs (and in the process gained even more respect for the artisans). The Wat itself was stunning and we spent much time admiring it. I really feel like this tour took us the most in depth, was the most educational, but also the most personal. If you enjoy handcrafted artwork, seeing things created, and learning the history of the Lanna kingdom, this is definitely the way to go!

Dear heather We’re profoundly thankful for this amazing review on how we executed your booked excursion in Chiang Mai. This Lost Treasures of Chiang Mai has all the elements included for, indeed, a different aspect of why the Rose of the North has more up its sleeve. It’s deeply rooted connection to handicraft without the commercial drive is what makes Thailand’s second largest city such a treat for exploration. Your kind words about our guide and the rest of the team will of course be shared internally. With many more historical and cultural landmarks available in the Land of Smiles, time to see you soon again and explore some more? With kind regards Asian Trails Thailand
